Company Memo: Thanksgiving Hacks, Getting Organized, and a Secret Starbucks Drink

November 17, 2017

Thanksgiving is just days away and I’ll be going on hiatus next week for some quality time with the fam bam, but Lorae’s Company Memo should have you in good shape as you prepare for Turkey Day. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Prepare: Thanksgiving Hacks

I don’t know about you but I’m already getting a little panicky about Thanksgiving and the food that comes with it. Will the stores have enough, how will I fit all this stuff in my fridge, how do you try something new but not pass over the annual favorites? I need to get a handle on it. We all have one week to get ready for Thanksgiving Day meals and I wanted to give you some resources to keep the crazy at bay and help the day run more smoothly. These thanksgiving hacks may be old but they are tried and true and not to be dismissed. I know most people have kids in their house and family and friends willing to help keep them entertained during the holiday, but these thanksgiving arts and crafts can always entertain. Plan ahead and stock some markers, construction paper and coffee filters and let the kids go to town and create while you are cooking away. Don’t forget to stop at the liquor store too—there are cocktails to be had and they won’t make themselves. Lastly if you need a laugh, enjoy this clip from The Late Show‘s Stephen Colbert working on the Butterball Hotline last year. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Download This App: WINNIE

Whether we are new mamas or old hats, we are still learning to manage life with babies, toddlers and kiddos. There is a new app called WINNIE that has been developed to help make parents’ lives easier. It it equal to Parents magazine & YELP for parents. WINNIE was developed to highlight kid-friendly places with features like nursing stations, stroller access, restrooms, changing tables, etc. It has evolved into a social platform to help eliminate the silo of parenting. You can read informative articles, ask followers questions, and receive age appropriate insights for your babe. This app offers information for over 100,000 locations, and as the customer base grows, more will be added. Remember just like your kiddo, WINNIE is growing and adapting alongside its user base, so have patience if your specific geographic area isn’t bustling with info yet.

Raise Your Hand: Volunteer

I too often feel like once we cross that Thanksgiving threshold, we trade gratitude for gluttony.  For me, thoughts of excess set in when we talk about what to get our children for the holidays. In all honestly, there is so much to be thankful for and so little needed. If you struggle with these feelings too, I encourage your to find opportunities to give back like the 3 ways mentioned here. I personally love Volunteer Match which allows you to choose whether you would like to volunteer as an individual or a group, who is volunteering, and what type of cause you would like to benefit.

Follow: The Home Edit

I love the girls of The Home Edit and you will too. I went to high school with Joanna, the co-founder of this Nashville-based dynamic duo. The ladies live by organizing, sorting, and following ROYGBIV, and they have made a business of it. Their resume includes organizing homes of some major A-Listers (oh, you know, Gwyenth Paltrow, Mindy Kahling, Molly Sims and the list goes on). I love looking at their feed, but do not think for a second that my closets look like theirs though it does give me plenty of inspiration. We all need some help controlling the mayhem of snacks, lego collections and abundant bathroom supplies. If nothing else, follow along just for the commentary of their Instastories—they are quick witted and openly honest mommas. If you want to duplicate any of their looks, they have even provided links where you can shop their website and find zen in your own pantry.

Order: Medicine Ball Tea from Starbucks

The secret’s out: Starbucks has a drink recipe for cold and flu season, and in some stores, it’s making its way to the main menu. It’s called the Medicine Ball and it’s a concoction of ingredients that has proved to be a real cold buster. Here’s the scoop:

  • 1 Venti cup with half hot water and half steamed lemonade
  • 1 bag of Teavana Jade Citrus Mint Tea
  • 1 bag of Teavana Peach Tranquility Tea
  • Packet of honey
  • Pump of peppermint (optional)

Next time you feel a head cold coming on or, god forbid, the flu, send your sweetie to Starbucks and ask for the Medicine Ball (otherwise known as Honey Citrus Mint Tea). And get that pump of peppermint. It’s worth it.
