Company Memo: Valentine’s Jewelry, A New HGTV Show, and a Flu Fashion Accessory

February 2, 2018

If your family is like mine, you’ve had your fair share of the flu this season. After my oldest daughter recovered a few weeks ago, we thought we were in the clear and then—BAM—my son went down. Our doc prescribed TamiFlu over the phone (same symptoms, sister had it) but then we spent an entire day trying to find a pharmacy that could fill the prescription in a kids’ dose! It’s been a particularly nasty flu season and I, like Lorae, appreciated the solution of the Scough (scarf+cough). I only wish we had thought of it! Have a great weekend folks, and may you be flu-free!

Adult Day Trip: Artechouse

Artechouse is a one of a kind immersive art space in Washington, D.C. known for its innovation. Last month, a new installation entitled Parallel Universe opened and has been getting beautiful response on social media. The exhibit is by an Turkish art studio named Ouchhh. It has been described as a 21st century psychedelic liquid light show. Its features are installed on 24-foot walls and the photography showing up on Instagram is just stunning. The multi-sensory visual installation may not be appropriate for children but could make for a really special date night. For crowds 21 and over you can go between 5:30 and 11:00pm Friday thru Sunday and there will be alcoholic beverages for purchase to enjoy alongside the show.

Get the Paper: NYT Kid Edition

Not many of us get the paper anymore—we check our online news sites, listen to podcasts but rarely do we relax with a steaming cup and the good ol’ TIMES. But this weekend you need to stop and pick up the real deal paper and sit down with the kiddos because this edition will be just for them….The New York Times: Kid Edition (actually the 3rd one) will feature complete sections for kids (travel, food, science, style, opinion and arts). It is now going to be a permanent fixture in the last Sunday paper of each month. The Kid Edition was first started in May of last year and the response was enormous. The edition is made for 8–12 year olds and is intentionally aimed at acquiring a new generation of readers. Curated with ideas from 10 year olds, the content is molded by visiting 4th grade classrooms and hearing what is on kids’ minds. I think we are going to love it.

Scough, Scough: Flu Fashion Accessory

Ya’ll do not laugh at me, I am straight up terrified of the flu. My fear is legit since I had a child who had pneumonia 3 times in an 18-month period. We are maniacal hand washers, sinus rinsers and many other things that I will not list, but we do all in the name of health. This week my favorite mama site, Cool Mom Picks spoke my love language when they profiled the perfect accessory for me...the scough. It’s a fashion accessory that will help us keep some germs at bay. Its made for adults and kids and there is pocket for an activated carbon mask (think industrial grade air filter). Prices start at 39.99 and the filters may need to be replaced every 3 months, we can get through the rest of the season on one, right?! My favorite is the ikat cream…all the kids versions are SOLD OUT!!! I don’t mind looking like a bandit when I’m walking to and from school with my dog but can our kids really walk around school like it’s the wild west? Obviously, a lot of parents are giving it a go. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Covet: Erin McDermott Jewelry

Erin McDermott is a North Carolina jewelry designer who I have been following for a while. She has some lovely designs, many with tribal influences, yet unique and understated. One of my favorites is the Napa Valley Necklace—I love its simplicity. There are some new arrivals that would be perfect for spring like the Bahama Mama and the morning coffee necklace. Her Instagram has plenty of inspiring looks. For Valentine’s Day, she is running a 50% off sale on 6 of her pieces. Maybe you can drop your sweetie a hint.

Home Decor Darlings: Restored by the Fords

Move over Chip and Joanna, there is a new team in town. Restored by the Fords is a new HGTV pair and their following is growing fast and furious. They are a brother/sister combo who have entered the Pittsburgh market. She handles design, he handles carpentry and the recipe is perfect. You will want to follow Leanne’s Instagram feed—you can see her past fashion experience feed her design aesthetic—she has incredible vision. Look at this amazing staircase that they just installed…love the modern twist. I cannot wait to watch and see what this pair has in store, and who doesn’t love a team revitalizing another American town. Catch Restored by the Fords on HGTV, stay tuned for more episodes.
