Company Memo: Spring Refresh

March 2, 2018

Turning the calendar to March is as much a fresh start as it is a hopeful prayer: the end of winter is visibly in sight, daffodils have popped their heads out of the ground, and Daylight Saving Time is next weekend! Thanks, Lorae, for helping us step out of our proverbial caves and give a little refresh to our homes, our closets, and our menus on today’s Company Memo.

Spring is in the air and I I think we are all ready to turn the page. My kids have begun to bare their legs and spring foliage is coming up. I joined a Mindful Challenge group this week and I wanted to introduce a concept I have been learning about. We’ve all heard of Marie Kondo’s The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, and 2017 introduced Meik Wiking’s The Art of Hygge. Danish people consistently appear as some of the happiest in the world. Why?? Hygge, simply put, it is about living simply, welcoming comfort and being present for your life. In this week’s Company Memo, I’m going to introduce you to ways that we can update our homes to have some spring hygge.

Bring Nature Indoors

Until last week, I still had red poinsettias in the house. I figured that they could linger to usher in Valentine’s Day. Now that time is over! There is nothing like having some fresh flowers and plants in the house to make you feel spring is on the way. I have found several subscription services that can keep that vase full of color on your table. Depending on your budget and the type of greenery you are looking for, there is something for everyone. A major trend in spring home updates is plants with patterned leaves and I stumbled upon Urban Sprouts, a plant subscription with budget friendly ideas for adding more green into your home. With their service you can go air plant (low care), cacti or small plant. Their price ranges from $9.99 to $11.99 per month. I could  work on my green thumb and these little 3-inch pots may be the perfect way to do that with kids.

Declutter and De-stress

We may have started a New Year’s resolution to declutter and simplify, but in order to keep things low stress, we have to keep up the organization! Keep these 5 rules in mind while decluttering. Here is another list of nitty gritty suggestions on preparing your home for spring.

Lighten Up

Look around the room, what looks heavy and dark? Add a bright new pillow in a lighter texture, replace the furry throw with a knit throw. Think of freshening your front door with a new paint, either inside or outside. Becki Owens had a really great post regarding paint colors and they are all clean and fresh and not too risky for anyone to give a shot. I would love to use Benjamin Moore Blue Heather to brighten our front door.

Change the Scent

Spring aromas can put you in the right mindset, so find scents that make you feel the sun, warmth, and fresh air. Green Roost in Culpeper, Va carries a wonderful line of handmade, small batch candles with sustainability and heritage in mind. Among its candles, the store carries Linnea’s Lights, a fragrance company with roots in Sweden. You can read about them here.

Bake Something Pretty

Previously, Molly wrote about her wonderful visit to a lavender farm and shared an amazing lavender scone recipe. On the next trip to the store grab a bunch of lemons, some for a bowl and some for a dish to share with friends. I would suggest Ina Garten’s Lemon Yogurt Cake.

Get Some Fresh Air

Take advantage of these beautiful days outside—few and far between—as they come. Observe the budding daffodils and grass greening up. Lie on a blanket and look at the clouds. Homework and dinner prep will be there, but enjoying these precious fleeting moments with loved ones is worth hitting the pause button.
