Company Memo: New Year Organization, Best Podcast, and Easy Ways to Save

January 5, 2018

It’s the first Company Memo of the new year, and Lorae is tuning us into fresh ways to save and organize, a HILARIOUS video-based mom blogger to remind us to keep it light, and a new podcast that will have us guessing. Don’t forget to enter to win Emily Ley’s A Simplified Life today on Instagram. I’ll announce the winner tomorrow morning!

Organize: 31 Day Challenge by Emily Ley

After spending time in attics and closets over the holidays and lugging all those holiday gifts inside, we all are needing to do a little purge. Both Molly and I are Emily Ley fans following the release of her new book A Simplified Life. To bring the book to life, she is hosting a 31- Day Challenge for the month of January to help her readers understand how she found simplicity in her daily life. (I honestly recorded one of her Instastories this week because it had so many great tips in it). If you are like me and realize there is more than a few boxes and drawers that needed some attention and want something a little more in depth, A Bowl Full of Lemons is a running a 14-week home organization challenge that will begin on January 6th (there is still time!). You can print out a week-by-week layout, a prep list and a step-by-step for each task. Invite someone to join with you so you can hold one another accountable.

Culture: The Terracotta Army Exhibit

When I was growing up I had a friend who had beautiful statues buried in the corners of her parents’ property. They were majestic, mysterious and inspiring. Years later, at the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach, CA, I discovered that these statues were replicas of one of the famous wonders of the world. You MUST go to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond this winter. Their new year exhibit is the Terracotta Army from the first emperor of China. This exhibit contains contributions from over 14 museums and archaeological sites. More than 40 items have never been on display within the United States before. Kids under 6 are free, Adults are $20 and Seniors are $14.The exhibit runs through March 11.

Laugh: Over Our Wall

Its a new year. . .is this all of us making resolutions? If you enjoyed that, here is my favorite clip from this family.

Listen: Criminal

I am always looking for a podcast and I have not found a good match since Serial and S-Town. . . until now. Meet Criminal – a true-crime podcast hailing from Durham, North Carolina, that will have you hooked. I cannot believe it began in 2014 and I am only now discovering it! New episodes come out twice a month, always on Fridays. I know true crime seems a little dark but you won’t want to miss this. Too bad all that holiday travel is behind us. Phoebe Judge, co-creator and host, has an addicting tone just as Sarah Keonig did. The podcast gives insight to the life of crimes, those whose stories they are, those behind the scenes, and the media that unfold the truth. Producers work hard to balance light with dark so that listeners do not feel like the stories are too heavy (they even throw a little humor in the mix too). I hope you enjoy like I have.

Save: Three Apps to Get You Started

We all begin the new year with a clean slate hoping that we can stay on track and save in the new year. This year there are 3 apps that can make this easier for you. All have bank-level security and are available on Android and ios devices.

Digit – Digit checks your spending patterns and moves money from your checking account to your digit account if you can afford it. You can easily withdraw it whenever you need it.
Qapital – Set a savings goal and set up rules that will help you inch your way toward that goal.
Acorns – Links to your purchases and rounds to the next dollar, allowing you to invest in your spare change.
