We’re on vacation in Charleston this weekend and having the best time. My niece, who lives in the Palmetto state, just turned 5 years old and we began our trip by celebrating at her Upside-Down, Backwards, Inside-Out birthday bash Saturday afternoon in Mt Pleasant. It was the perfect way to get our vacation week started!
After a long day of travel, Winnie took a nap in the swing before calling it quits for the night!
One restful sleep later, we spent Sunday morning visiting the USS Yorktown, a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier commissioned in 1943. Earning the nickname “Fighting Lady” the Yorktown participated in the Pacific offensive in WWII, served in Vietnam from 1965-68, and recovered the Apollo 8 astronauts and capsule in 1968 (a year before the Apollo 11 landed on the moon). The kids loved looking at the decommissioned aircrafts on the flight deck, taking a ride in the flight simulator, and checking out the Charleston skyline from the ship.
After leaving the Yorktown, we meandered around the historic Charleston City Market for a bit, then came back for a late afternoon boat ride on the Wando River. It was the perfect way to end the afternoon.
Today, we make our way to Pecan Hill Plantation in Tillman, South Carolina, then Savannah, and by week’s end we’ll circle around to Greenville, South Carolina to visit my best friend and her family. All in the final stretch before the start of school. We are soaking in the last of summer for sure!
