I get to see my friend—and today’s guest blogger—the Fredericksburg Foodie in less than two weeks for a quick overnight in Richmond, Virginia, recently named one of The South’s Best Food Towns in Garden & Gun. This is perfect for us since we literally eat our way through every town we visit. I can’t wait to try her Cider Wine Cocktail when temps turn cooler this weekend. And though we Virginians can pick up our Bold Rock Cider at any grocery store in the state, I think this drink may require a visit to the cidery itself. Cheers!

Before children, my mom was my pumpkin patch partner. One year we came down with fall fever on a marginally cool day and stopped in at Belvedere Plantation in Fredericksburg. We were ready to explore the fields until an employee approached us and let us know that they hadn’t yet opened for the season—it was still August. Yes, I’ve been escorted off pumpkin patch property! But once that first crisp day rolls around, no matter the month, I’m going into full fall mode, pulling out the harvest decor and making all things apple and pumpkin!
Virginia has a bounty of wineries, breweries and cideries, all of which seem to be nestled in the most beautiful locations. My husband and I are loving the movement that these establishments have made to become family-friendly. Our favorite, Bold Rock Hard Cider in Nellysford, boasts a tasting room and bottling facility in a rustic timber barn overlooking the Rockfish River. Our kids have great fun splashing in the gentle rapids as we sit nearby and enjoy our cider flights. Does a fall day get any more perfect than that?!
This Wine Cider Cocktail was inspired by the Virginia Draft Cider at Bold Rock, although any hard cider would work well in this recipe. Enjoy the season!
Apple Cider Cocktail
1 Bottle Hard Apple Cider
2 Cups Apple Cider
1 Cup Club Soda
1 Bottle Pinot Grigio
1 Apple, thinly sliced
1 Pear, thinly sliced
1 Orange, thinly sliced
Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher and serve chilled.
